BME Seminars - Damien RICARD

Seminar announcement flyer

We are pleased to announce that this week’s OpenYourMind seminar will be given by Damien Ricard, Head of the HIA PERCY Neurology Department, SSA National Clinical Research Coordinator, Director of the Clinical Research Center of the Military Hospital Complex of Ile de France. The seminar will be held this Friday, 16/11/2018 between 1:30 pm and 3 pm in Amphi Bezier at ENSAM ParisTech (151, Boulevard de l’Hopital, 75013 Paris). The seminar topic will be “Engineering at the heart of medical sciences : Example of the study of neurological gait”.

Short abstract

Walking is a complex activity and a permanent decision-making process that can be altered in a variety of neurological pathologies. Gait disorders can lead to impaired mobility, disability, fear of falling or falls, which can result in reduced quality of life and increased risk of death. Assessment of walking impairmentsis paramount. From robust but cumbersome video motion analysis to wearable and light inertial measurement units, a large panel of sensors has been developed to allow such an enterprise. But all of them entail the development of an integrated and comprehensive environment for wide-scale adoption by clinicians. The need for more robust gait detection algorithms and computation of clinically relevant features emphasizes the centrality of the computer scientist. This need would benefit from recent development of computer-aided diagnosis methods including machine learning. Eventually, feedback from the patient should be welcomed and sought at every stage. Only then will new applications be delineated and the contribution of gait analysis to improving the understanding of gait disorders be fully appreciated.
