BME Seminars - Trevor Cloete

Seminar announcement flyer

This week’s OpenYourMind seminar will be given by Trevor Cloete, Senior lecturer at University of Cape Town (UCT) and Researcher in the Blast Impact and Survivability Research Unit (BISRU). The seminar will be held this Friday, 27/11/2015 between 1:30 pm and 3 pm in Amphi Fournel at ENSAM ParisTech (151, Boulevard de l’Hopital, 75013 Paris). The seminar topic will be “Design philosophy of dynamic experiments for bone constitutive model validation”.

Trevor Cloete is a senior lecturer at University of Cape Town and researcher in the Blast Impact and Survivability Research Unit (BISRU). BISRU’s a small but broadly focused research group looking at blast and impact loading of structures with the point of view of being able to design protective structures. Blast work has been conducted at UCT since the 1970’s. In the last decade, the work has extended into biomechanics.

The focus of the biomechanics work has been on the dynamic testing of the cortical and cancelous bone for the purpose of model development and validation. This presentation will focus on the design philosophy around which the various testing techniques have been developped and the specific technical challenges that arise for the testing of visco-elastic-brittle materials, especially at strain rates that correspond to those encountered during everyday life activities. This work has involved close ties with ENSAM and this presentation will include a brief history of how this came about.
